Since the shift to hybrid and remote work, millions of Australians are now handling sensitive business data on home networks that were set up by plugging in a modem and never touched again. We see this every week across Clarkson, Butler, Joondalup and all of northern Perth — and most people are genuinely surprised how exposed they are.

The good news: securing your home network for work doesn't require a degree in IT. These are practical steps anyone can take, and we're happy to help if you'd rather have an expert handle it.

Why Home Networks Are a Risk for Remote Workers

  • Most home routers use default admin passwords that are publicly known and easily guessed
  • Older routers run outdated firmware with known security vulnerabilities
  • Smart home devices (TVs, doorbells, cameras) share your network and are often poorly secured
  • Family members and guests share the same network as your work devices
  • Home ISPs provide consumer-grade equipment not designed for business security
Real risk: An attacker who compromises one device on your home network can potentially intercept traffic from other devices — including your work laptop — using a technique called a man-in-the-middle attack.

7 Steps to Secure Your Home Network for Work

  1. Change your router's admin password — log into your router (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) and change the default admin credentials immediately
  2. Use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption — check your Wi-Fi security settings; if you're still on WEP or WPA (without the 2), upgrade now
  3. Update your router's firmware — most modern routers have an auto-update option in settings; enable it
  4. Create a separate guest network for IoT devices — keep your smart TV, Ring doorbell and other devices on a separate network from your work laptop
  5. Use a VPN for work — a VPN encrypts all traffic between your device and the internet, making it far harder to intercept. Ask your IT provider to set one up
  6. Enable MFA on all work accounts — even if your network is compromised, MFA prevents attackers logging into your accounts with stolen credentials
  7. Keep your work laptop's firewall and antivirus active — never disable these, even at home
Quick win: Creating a guest network for your smart home devices takes about 5 minutes in most modern router settings and immediately reduces your attack surface significantly.
