The online IT hardware market in Australia has expanded dramatically over the past few years — which is great for choice and pricing, but also means there are more ways to get burned. Grey imports with no Australian warranty, counterfeit accessories, and misleading "Australian" pricing on products shipped from overseas are all genuine traps for business buyers.
As an Australian IT reseller that's been helping Perth businesses and now ships nationally, here's what we tell every customer before they click Buy anywhere.
Understand Australian vs Grey Market Pricing
The first thing to understand is that the same piece of hardware can have very different real-world costs depending on where you buy it. A Lenovo ThinkPad listed at $100 less than market price on an online marketplace might save you $100 upfront — but cost you $300+ in freight and delays if you ever need a warranty claim, because the product was imported without going through Lenovo's Australian distribution.

The Five Things to Check Before You Buy
- ABN on the invoice — any legitimate Australian business selling to other businesses must provide a GST invoice with their ABN. If a seller won't provide one, walk away.
- Warranty country of coverage — check whether the warranty is Australia-wide or overseas-only. The product listing should state this; if it doesn't, ask.
- GST included in price — Australian prices must include GST. If you're seeing AUD prices with no GST component, the seller may be overseas and the AUD price may be a conversion that attracts import GST separately.
- Return policy — under Australian Consumer Law, you're entitled to a refund or replacement if a product is faulty. Verify the seller has an Australian address for returns.
- Shipping timeframe — "Ships from Australia" doesn't always mean it ships from Australia. Check estimated delivery times; 4–6 weeks usually means it's coming from overseas.
Beware of "Marketplace" Listings on Major Retail Sites
Large retail websites often mix their own stock with third-party marketplace sellers. The product listing might look identical whether it's sold by the retailer or an overseas marketplace seller — but the warranty and return experience can be completely different. Always check who is actually selling the item before purchasing.
Accessories: Where Grey Imports Are Most Common
The accessories market — cables, USB hubs, docking stations, power adapters, webcams — is where grey imports and outright counterfeits are most prevalent. A $12 USB-C cable might be a perfectly good product, or it might be a fire risk. The difference is usually impossible to tell from a photo.
For anything that carries mains power (chargers, UPS units, power boards), we strongly recommend buying only from reputable Australian resellers. Australian electrical safety standards exist for a reason, and the $20 you save on a cheap charger is not worth a fire or a fried laptop.
Buying Networking Gear in Australia
Business networking hardware — switches, access points, routers, firewalls — is another area where buying locally from an authorised reseller matters enormously. Enterprise networking gear often requires firmware that matches your region, and support contracts (like Ubiquiti's UI Care) are typically registered to the country of purchase.
We carry the full UniFi range at our online store, sourced through authorised Australian distributors, with all the Australian warranty and compliance that comes with it. If you're building or upgrading a business network, read our UniFi networking guide for Australian SMBs.
What About Buying Refurbished IT Hardware?
Refurbished gear can be excellent value — especially ex-lease business equipment that's been professionally cleaned, tested and recertified. The key questions to ask:
- Who did the refurbishment — the original manufacturer (best), a certified refurbisher, or an unknown third party?
- What warranty comes with it — 3 months is the bare minimum, 12 months is reasonable for business use
- Is it grade A, B or C condition — and what does that actually mean for this seller?
- Does it come with original accessories, or just the unit?
For most small businesses, a manufacturer-certified refurbished laptop at 60–70% of new price with a 12-month warranty represents excellent value. Avoid "untested" or "sold as is" listings for anything you're putting in production use.
Getting the Best Price on IT Hardware in Australia
A few practical tips from years of sourcing IT hardware for Australian businesses:
- Buy in small batches rather than one-offs — even 2–3 units of the same model usually qualifies for a volume discount from a reseller. Ask before you order.
- Check end-of-quarter timing — many resellers run promotions at end of financial quarter (December and June in Australia) to hit sales targets. This is when you'll find the best deals on business hardware.
- Ask about free shipping thresholds — most Australian IT resellers (including us) offer free shipping on orders over a certain amount. If you're close to the threshold, it's worth adding another item rather than paying freight.
- Consider total cost of ownership — a $300 cheaper laptop that needs a $200 battery replacement in 18 months and fails out of warranty at 2.5 years is not cheaper than a $300 more expensive model with a 3-year warranty.
